Understanding Tire Pressure: PSI, TPMS & When to Check

Why tire pressure matters
- Correct tire pressure affects handling, braking distance, tire wear, and fuel economy.
- Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, reducing fuel economy by up to 3%.
- Over-inflated tires reduce the contact patch, leading to uneven center wear and reduced grip.
Where to find your recommended PSI
- The recommended pressure is on a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb — not on the tire itself.
- The number on the tire sidewall is the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure.
- Front and rear may have different recommended pressures, especially on trucks and SUVs.
How and when to check tire pressure
- Check tire pressure when tires are cold (before driving or at least 3 hours after).
- Use a quality digital gauge — gas station gauges are often inaccurate.
- Check all four tires plus the spare at least once a month.
- Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature.
Understanding TPMS
- TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) alerts you when pressure drops below a threshold, typically 25% below recommended.
- A TPMS warning doesn’t mean you have a flat — it means at least one tire is low enough to need attention.
- TPMS sensors have batteries that last 5–10 years. Replacement costs $50–$100 per sensor.
