How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Understand intervals, driving styles, and what the “severe service” schedule really means.

Check the owner’s manual first

  • Your owner’s manual gives the most accurate interval for your exact engine.
  • Look for both time-based (e.g., 12 months) and mileage-based (e.g., 5,000–10,000 miles) recommendations.

Normal vs. “severe” driving

  • Severe service often includes short trips, extreme temperatures, towing, or lots of stop-and-go traffic.
  • If your driving matches severe conditions, follow the shorter interval listed in the manual.

Modern synthetics last longer

  • Many modern engines with full synthetic oil can safely go 7,500–10,000 miles between changes under ideal conditions.
  • If you’re unsure or your car is older, shorter intervals are safer.
