How to Change Your Oil (Step-by-Step)

A friendly walk-through of the DIY oil change process, from tools to cleanup.

1. Get your tools and supplies ready

  • Oil (correct viscosity and quantity for your vehicle).
  • New oil filter and drain plug washer (if required).
  • Socket/wrench for the drain bolt, oil catch pan, funnel, rags, and gloves.
  • Wheel chocks and jack stands or ramps if the drain plug is not easily accessible.

2. Warm up the engine briefly

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 3–5 minutes. Warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants.
  • Do not get the oil scalding hot — you should be able to work safely around the exhaust and oil pan.

3. Drain the old oil

  • Safely raise and support the vehicle if needed. Always use jack stands or ramps on level ground.
  • Position the drain pan under the drain bolt.
  • Loosen the drain bolt with the correct socket, then carefully remove it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain completely — usually several minutes.

4. Replace or inspect the drain bolt washer

  • If your vehicle uses a crush washer, replace it with a new one.
  • Inspect the drain bolt threads for damage. If they’re damaged, replace the bolt.

5. Install the new filter

  • Wipe the filter mounting surface with a clean rag.
  • Lightly oil the rubber gasket on the new filter with fresh oil.
  • Spin the filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the base, then tighten by hand another 3/4 turn (or to the torque spec if provided).

6. Reinstall the drain bolt

  • Clean the area around the drain hole.
  • Install the drain bolt with the new washer (if required).
  • Tighten to the specified torque value if you have a torque wrench. Otherwise, snug plus a bit more — never over-tighten.

7. Refill with fresh oil

  • Set the drain pan aside and lower the vehicle if it was raised.
  • Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
  • Use a funnel to pour in the recommended amount of oil for your vehicle.

8. Start and check for leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Check underneath for any leaks around the drain bolt and filter.
  • Shut off the engine and wait a couple of minutes, then check the dipstick and top up if needed.

9. Reset the maintenance reminder

  • Many modern vehicles have an oil life monitor or maintenance reminder.
  • Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual to reset the reminder after each oil change.
