Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil

Why synthetics exist, when they’re worth the money, and how to decide what to use.

What is synthetic oil?

  • Synthetic oil is engineered for better stability at high and low temperatures.
  • It resists breakdown longer than conventional oil, which can mean cleaner internals and better protection.

When synthetic makes sense

  • Turbocharged engines, high-performance cars, and engines that see extreme temperatures often benefit most.
  • If your owner’s manual specifies synthetic, stick with it.

Mixing and switching oils

  • You can generally switch between conventional and synthetic as long as the viscosity and specs meet the manual.
  • Mixing small amounts is not catastrophic, but for best results use one type consistently.
