How to Replace Your Cabin Air Filter
Clear up weak airflow and musty smells by swapping the filter behind your glovebox in minutes.

1. Signs it needs replacing
- Weak airflow from the vents even on high fan speed.
- A musty or dusty smell when the heater or A/C runs.
- Most manufacturers recommend replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000–30,000 miles, or once a year.
2. Find the filter housing
- On most vehicles the cabin filter sits behind the glovebox.
- Open the glovebox, then squeeze the sides or release the stop arms so it drops down fully.
- Behind it you’ll see a rectangular plastic cover or door — that’s the filter housing.
3. Remove the old filter
- Unclip or slide out the cover and pull the old filter straight out.
- Note the airflow arrow printed on the frame — it usually points down (toward the floor).
- Old filters are often surprisingly dirty; this is normal and exactly why you’re replacing it.
4. Install the new filter
- Slide the new filter in with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one.
- Reinstall the cover, then lift the glovebox back into place and reconnect the stop arms.
- Run the fan for a moment to confirm airflow has improved.
