How to Replace Your Cabin Air Filter

Clear up weak airflow and musty smells by swapping the filter behind your glovebox in minutes.

1. Signs it needs replacing

  • Weak airflow from the vents even on high fan speed.
  • A musty or dusty smell when the heater or A/C runs.
  • Most manufacturers recommend replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000–30,000 miles, or once a year.

2. Find the filter housing

  • On most vehicles the cabin filter sits behind the glovebox.
  • Open the glovebox, then squeeze the sides or release the stop arms so it drops down fully.
  • Behind it you’ll see a rectangular plastic cover or door — that’s the filter housing.

3. Remove the old filter

  • Unclip or slide out the cover and pull the old filter straight out.
  • Note the airflow arrow printed on the frame — it usually points down (toward the floor).
  • Old filters are often surprisingly dirty; this is normal and exactly why you’re replacing it.

4. Install the new filter

  • Slide the new filter in with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one.
  • Reinstall the cover, then lift the glovebox back into place and reconnect the stop arms.
  • Run the fan for a moment to confirm airflow has improved.
