What you'll need ● Oil — check your owner’s manual or oil cap for viscosity (e.g. 0W-20, 5W-30) ● Oil filter — match your year/make/model at any auto parts store ● Drain plug washer or gasket (check if yours is reusable) ● Socket wrench set, oil catch pan, funnel, rags, and gloves ● Jack and jack stands or ramps (if needed for clearance) Where to find your specs 1. Oil cap — many cars print the viscosity right on it 2. Owner’s manual — lists viscosity, capacity, and filter type 3. Auto parts store — tell them your year/make/model 4. Dipstick — confirm the correct level after refilling Step-by-step oil change 1 Warm the engine Run it for 3–5 minutes. Warm oil flows out faster.
Raise and secure the vehicle Use jack stands or ramps on level ground.
Drain the old oil Place catch pan under the plug. Loosen with a socket wrench, remove by hand.
Replace the drain plug washer Swap crush washers for new ones. Inspect plug threads.
Install the new filter Wipe the surface. Oil the new gasket. Hand-tighten plus 3/4 turn.
Reinstall drain plug and refill Tighten to spec. Add oil through the filler cap using a funnel.
Start, check for leaks, verify level Run 30–60 seconds. Check underneath. Check dipstick.
Dispose of old oil properly Most auto parts stores accept used oil for free recycling.
